Ionic bonds contain atoms of metals, which give off certain number of electrons to produce a cation and are bonded to atoms of nonmetals, which receive the additional electron and become negatively charged. The electrostatic attraction between the 2 ions results in the ionic bond, forming a crystal or ionic lattice type structure.
