A cookie jar contains 315 M&M's. There are only brown and green M&M's in the jar. The number of green M&M's is 8 times that of the brown M&M's. Write and solve a system to find out how many of each color M&M are in the jar.

Answer:

35 brown

280 green

Explanation:

Let x be the number of brown M&M's and y be the number of green

x+y=315

y=8x

We can substitue 8x for y to figure out the value of x

x+8x=315

9x=315

x=35

There are 35 brown M&M's. Now, we just plus it in the equation

y=8(35)

y=280

There are 280 green M&M's. Now, we check our work just in case

35+280=315

315=315
