It means getting all the variables on one side and getting all the numbers on one side. For example:
3y=6(4)+12 x=4
/3 /3 /3
( I was trying to divide by three)
y=8+4
y=12
Hope this helps

Isolating variables mean to get the variable, or the letter all by itself by doing something to get rid of the number/numbers that are on the same side. That way you can solve for that missing variable.
