Manhattan Island was purchased for about twenty-four dollars' worth of trade goods by Peter Minuit. Peter Minuit was actually a Walloon from Tournai, which is present-day Belgium. He is known for coordinating the purchase of Manhattan Island. He purchased Manhattan from Native Americans for the Dutch. Later, Manhattan became the site of the Dutch city of New Amsterdam. It is estimated that he purchased Manhattan for $24 worth of trinkets.
