Most Americans favored the policy of isolationism.
Most Americans favored this policy because of the US getting involved in European affairs by entering World War I. This expensive overseas war that caused thousands of American casualties was not something that Americans wanted to happen again soon.
This is why president Warren G. Harding ran on a policy that focused on a "return to normalcy." This meant the implementation of America's prior stance as an isolated nation. He would win the presidency and help America to establish isolationist policies again.
