I phoned him because he was not home.

The second part of the sentence is now dependent on the first as it cannot stand alone as its own sentence.

Answer:

I phoned him but he was not home

Step-by-step explanation:

A clause is a group of related words that have at least a subject and a verb. When the clause can stand on its own, and have full meaning, the clause is independent; but when a clause needs another clause in order to make sense, it is dependent. In the sentence created, "I phoned him" is the independent clause and "but he was not home" is the dependent clause as it can not stand alone and have full meaning.
