Why are smooth muscle cells shaped the way they are?

The smooth muscle cell is spindle shaped to allow flexibility. It is an involuntary type of tissue. It is found in many internal organs. Like anne says, it is to provide flexibility to contract and relax the walls of the organs.
Note: It is NOT found in the heart.
