Additionally, people could also visit Quincy Market, one of the largest market complexes in U.S.A., and The New England Aquarium with entertaining live animal displays all the time.

My answer to this question is that the north and south battery are shoreline batteries, small ports used for defense that is found in the Boston harbor.  Boston was known for its trading industry and these might be their line of defense to protect this City.
