After the civil war exploded in Russia in 1918, the regime forced a brutal economic policy, known as war communism. For three years Russia suffered a divisive civil war between the Bolshevik Red Army and the counter-revolutionary confederation. The Russian Civil War, the Bolshevik economic policies and a series of relentless droughts created a terrible famine that killed over five million Russian peasants.
