Answer:

X=-4, y=-4

Explanation:

You have to multiply the second equation by 3 so you can eliminate y.

3(-9x+3y)=3(24)

-27x+9y=72

now you can add the two equations

First equation. 5x-9y=16

Modified 2nd equation -27x+9y=72

add together -22x+0=88

solve for x X=-4

solve for y

5x-9y=16

5(-4)-9y=16

-20-9y=16

-9y=36

y=-4

check answer by substituting x and y value into either equation

5x-9y=16

5(-4)-9(-4)=16

-20+36=16

16=16
