To eliminate the x-terms and solve for y in the fewest steps, by which constants should the equations be multiplied?

First equation: 6x − 5y = 17

Second equation: 7x + 3y = 11

To eliminate the x-terms and solve for y

you need to multiply (7) to the first equation
6x − 5y = 17 ( multiply 7)

42x - 35y = 119
------------------------------------------

Now you need to multiply(6) to the second equation
7x + 3y = 11 ( multiply 6)

42x + 18y = 66

Now you have 2 new equations
42x - 35y = 119
42x + 18y = 66

You can subtract those two equation to eliminate x and solve for y

Answer:

Multiply the first equation by -7 and second equation by 6

Explanation:

First equation:
6x - 5y = 17

Second equation:
7x + 3y = 11

To eliminate x terms, the coefficient of x should be same with different sign.

WE have different coefficient of x.

To get same coefficient for x , we multiply both equation by opposite coefficients.

Multiply the first equation by -7 and second equation by 6

To eliminate the x-terms and solve for y , Multiply the first equation by -7 and second equation by 6
