If everybody in a true democratic society only voted for things that affected them then they won't think about anybody else's needs and when people are only thinking about themselves then they will never vote for the bill that says that the unemployed need to work because it doesn't affect them.

Individualisms dissolves the ties or duties which link human beings to one another hence making them self-centered. Therefore, they impose their own way on the rest of the people because they fail to connect or identify with them, and will defend their position, however cruelly.
