Yes it was. The queen was overthrown. Then Hawaii was free from its monarchy.

Annexing Hawaii was in direct disagreement with American ideals about freedom, in fact it went against our own laws. American businessmen, not Hawaiian citizens or native Hawaiians, overthrew the government of this foreign nation in the hopes of gain a even bigger advantage for their corporate greed. The American ideals about freedom rely on the belief that everyone gets a choice to live the life they want. By annexing this foreign nation without war, negotiation, or purchase the annexation was a forceful unconsented takeover. A takeover which very much emulated the very imperialism the U.S. had strived to separate from.
