An ion of magnesium has 12 protons and a charge of +2. how many electrons are in this ion? A. 2 B. 20 C. 12 D. 14

Somewhat confused by this as when anything has a positive charge it means that it has lost electrons, and since the magnesium atom has 12 protons, and protons never change, then I would assume it would have 10 electrons. But that doesn't match anything so...
