so from the statement, One half of a number increased by a second number equals 5.

`(a)/(2)+b=5`

and One half of the first number decreased by the second number equals 1.

`(a)/(2)-b=1`

add both the equations,

`\begin{gathered} (a)/(2)+(a)/(2)+b-b=5+1 \\ a=6 \end{gathered}`

put a= 6 in first equation

`\begin{gathered} (6)/(2)+b=5 \\ 3+b=5 \\ b=5-3 \\ b=2 \end{gathered}`
