x2 x2 multiply both sides by 2
6-x=8
-6 -6 subtract 6 on both sides
-x=2
/-x /-x divide by -x to get positive x
x=-2

--or--

6-(x/2)=4
-6 -6 subtract 6 on both sides
-x/2=-2

if it is (6 - x) / 2 = 4......

(6 -x) / 2 = 4....multiply both sides by 2
6 - x = 8
6 - 8 = x
-2 = x

and if it is 6 - (x/2) = 4....multiply both sides by 2
12 - x = 8
12 - 8 = x
4 = x

parenthesis can make a big difference in a problem....
