Well Queen Elizabeth I forbid anyone to wear it that wasn't in the royal blood. It cost a lot for the dye and since she forbade anyone else to wear it it was rare for anyone to be seen in it there. Because of all of that, purple has been associated with wealth and power also including royalty.
