•What was the significance of the Mormon Battalion?

The battalion's service/march helped the cession of a lot of the American Southwest from Mexico to the U.S., particularly the Gadsen Purchase of Arizona and New Mexico in 1853. The march opened up a southern waggon route in which led to California. Veterans of the battalion had important roles in America's westward expansion in California, Arizona, and Utah and other parts of the west.
