The water is stored high above the turbine to provide water potential energy. This type of energy is stored in the water and depends on the elevation of the water. As the water falls down into the turbine, the potential is transformed into kinetic energy which turns the turbine. A generator is connected to the turbine which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy.
