Final answer:

Gratitude is shown through uttering 'I'm much obliged,' dreaming about future success with thankful eyes, and sending a personal thank you note. These expressions of gratitude highlight the characters' manners and personalities.

Step-by-step explanation:

In the provided texts, gratitude is expressed differently by the characters. McTeague, for example, repeats his thanks verbally, albeit somewhat awkwardly, by saying, 'I'm much obliged,' which indicates a formal or traditional expression of gratitude. On the other hand, the character who dreams of luxury and splendor shows a nonverbal form of gratitude through his large, rolling eyes and the chuckling at his good fortune, which reveals an internal sense of thankfulness and pleasure. Lastly, Jane sends Magda a thank you note, which is a personal and considerate way to show appreciation for Magda's time and advice.

Their actions underscore the belief that the expression of gratitude can take various forms, from spoken words to written communication, and even through one's demeanor and silent musings about the future. These different manners of expressing gratitude reflect the individual characters' personalities and circumstances.

At first the people does not bluntly show gratitude to Jim, they treat what he does as his work which does not need gratitude. Later on, they learned that they must thank him for his work even if he gets paid for doing it. They should still show gratitude to him, this boosts his morale and will make him enjoy his work more.
