Because people were buying on credit with no intention of paying it back.

The stock market crash in the 1929 cause a shift in culture and attitudes in the 1930's because it started the Great Depression which affected many people especially farmers. The soil became too dry to plant new crops. Buying on margin/credit also was a cause because it ruined people economy. People businesses went down and America was starting to fall.
