There were 21 pumpkins in a garden patch. Children picked 4/6 of the pumpkins.

How many pumpkins did the children pick?

First, simplify
(6)/(4) into (3)/(2)

Second,
21 - (3)/(2)

= 19.5

The children picked 14 pumpkins. 4/6 is another way to say 2/3. So the children picked 14 pumpkins because 2/3 of 21 is 14.
