We let x and y be the number of copies in hardcover version and paperback version, respectively. The equations that would best represent the given scenario above are
x + y = 45
7x + 5y = 249
The values of x and y from the system of linear equations are 12 and 33, respectively. Therefore, there are 12 hardcover version and 33 paperback versions.
