The Council of Trent was where the Roman Catholic defined what constituted heresy(acts deemed sinful or detrimental to the Church). The Society of Jesus was founded by Ignatius de Loyola in 1540. Its purpose was to defend Christianity at home and abroad. It was also central in missionary work around the world, particularly in the Spanish Colonies. The Inquisition was founded by Pope Innocentius IV in response to the Waldensian and Cathar heresies in 12th century France. Other groups that were investigated by the Inquisition were John Wycliffe's Lollards, the Hussites of Jan Hus, and the Beguines. Its jobs was to destroy the heresies. Its activities included spying, torture, mass expulsions, and executions.
