How is LGBT portrayed in the media?

Overwhelmingly, the portrayal of LGBT people in the American media centers on white LGBT people and their experiences. LGBT persons of color are severely underrepresented in the media in comparison to their actual population within the community. Most LGBT characters who appear in mainstream media are white.
