Here is the definition of democracy:
"a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body, such as a parliament."
People's living conditions are supposed to be better in a democratic era because they themselves choose the people who will represent their wishes and needs in the government. They should all be equal and thus live a better life given that they have the power to choose what their country will look like.
