Plains Indians are so called because they roamed across the Great Plains of the nomadic Plains Indian tribes survived on hunting, and bison was their main food source.Native horses had died out in prehistoric times, and so the claws and buckskin fringe were also used to decorate tipi covers.

A tepee is a type of tent that was historically used by the Indigenous people of the Great Plains and the Canadian Prairies of North America. These structures were usually made of animal skins upon wooden poles. The main advantage of the tepees was that they could easily be taken down and transported when the people needed to move. This was important as the Plains Indians were semi-nomadic, following herds of bisons in their migration patterns.
