during the prohibition of alcohol there were what you would call tea parties where they would get together and drink. there was also a thing called jakes step which was caused from methanol alcohol in a bottle of jakes elixir it was a cold medicine. people would drink it and if they consumed enough they would get what was called jakes step or permanent blindness and even death
