take 1/2 of the linear coefient and square it
add that to both sides

-10 is the linear coefient
1/2 of it is -5
squared it is 25
add 25 to both sides

x^2-10x+25=-8+25
x^2-10x+25=17
factor perfect square
(x-5)^2=17

answer is A
