Let x be the quantity of flour used

Let y be the quantity of milk used

A pancake recipe asked for one and 2/3 times as much milk as flour:

y=1(2)/(3)x

If two and one half cups of milk is used what quantity of flower would be needed according to the recipe?

Find x when y=2 1/2:

2(1)/(2)=1(2)/(3)x

Write the quantities as fractions;

\begin{gathered} 2+(1)/(2)=(1+(2)/(3))x \\ \\ (4)/(2)+(1)/(2)=((3)/(3)+(2)/(3))x \\ \\ (5)/(2)=(5)/(3)x \end{gathered}

Solve x:

x=((5)/(2))/((5)/(3))=(15)/(10)

Write the answer as a mixed number:

(15)/(10)=(10)/(10)+(5)/(10)=1+(5)/(10)=1+(1)/(2)=1(1)/(2)Then, for 2 1/2 cups of milk would be needed 1 1/2 cups of flourAnswer: 1 1/2
