The plantation system brought in slaves which made the north and south mad at each other and then there was a debate about getting Texas from Mexico because it might turn into a slave state and some people didn't want that. I believe that's the answer but I'm not completely sure if that's the answer your teacher is looking for.

the plantation system brought about the fact that many slaves were needed to help 'run' (work in) the plantations, and soon, there were more african americans than whites in certain southern states.
