While the German invasion of Poland is considered the start of World War II in Europe, the United States kept its neutrality for the next two years (even through the German air attack on Britain) until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The sinking of the passenger ship Lusitania was one of a number of issues that led to American involvement in World War I.
