At the molecular level, the pressure of a gas depends on the number of collisions its molecules have with the walls of the container. If the pressure on the piston is doubled, the volume of the gas decreases by one-half.

When there are more collisions between the particles and their container, the pressure rises.

  • Temperature. The more the temperature, the more the kinetic energy transferred resulting into giving particles more energy to successfully collide with each other at a faster rate and with the container.
  • Number of gas particles inside the container. The more the particles, the more the pressure, the more the particles shall collide with each other and with the container. Thus pressure increases with the number of gas particles.
