When Ellis Island opened, a great change was taking place in immigration to the United States. As arrivals from northern and western Europe–Germany, Ireland, Britain and the Scandinavian countries–slowed, more and more immigrants poured in from southern and eastern Europe.

Answer: The correct answer is : The immigrants, upon arriving at Ellis Island, were first interrogated, reviewed and inspected by doctors and workers of the island, before beginning their life in the United States. The immigrants would be around five hours on the island, which is located near the Statue of Liberty.
