Okay here's how you solve the answer... okay so you draw two boxes then, you put 20 little marks in one box and 16 little marks in the second box , ( the marks represent the pencils). Then it says she gave her brother three of those color pencil then she wants to put the color of pencils that she has left into three equal groups so now you add 20+ 16 so you now how many color pencils there are total, so 20 + 16 = 36 now you subtract 3 to represent how many pencils she gave to her brother so, 36- 3= 33 pencils now. then it says she wants to divide the pencils into 3 different groups so now all you have to do is 33 / 3 because that's how many colored pencils she has and how many groups she wants to make so, 33/3= 11 pencils per group!

Work: 20 + 16 = 36 (Addition)

Then gave his brother 3 (Subtraction)

36 - 3 = 33

Now put them into equal groups (Division)

33 divided by 3= 11
