x + y = 40 โ†’ (1)

x = y + 8 โ†’ (2) [ greater number 8 more than smaller ]

Substitute x = y + 8 into (1)

y + 8 + y = 40, that is

2y + 8 = 40 ( subtract 8 from both sides )

2y = 32 ( divide both sides by 2 )

y = 16

Substitute y = 16 into (2)

x = 16 + 8 = 24

The 2 numbers are 16 and 24
