1. A sailboat moves north for a distance of 10.00 km when blown by a wind from the exact southeast with a force of 2.00 × 104 N. The sailboat travels the distance in 1.0 h. How much work was done by the wind? What was the wind’s power? Your response should include all of your work and a free-body diagram.

The distance traveled is 10 km north.
The force is 2x10^4N and directed from the exact southeast. The vertical component of the force is
2x10^4 N sin 45 = 1.4 x 10^4 N
The work done is
1.4 x 10^4 N (10 x 10^3 m) = 1.41 x 10^8 N-m
The power done is
1.41 x 10^8 N-m (1 h) (3600 s/1hr) = 5.1 x 10^11 N-m/s or W
