I have a feeling I might be wrong, but this is what I came up with...

-12 = -5 | x + 1| + 3
+ 5 +5 + 5
-----------------------------
-7 = | x + 1| + 8
-8 -8
----------------------
-15 = | x + 1|

-15 = x + 1 15 = x + 1
-1 -1 -1 -1
----------------- OR --------------------
-16 = x 14 = x

Your two values are -16 and 14 if I'm correct.
