In the play, a messenger, who is a shepherd by profession, reveals to Oedipus that another shepherd approached him many years ago with a baby who was, in fact, Oedipus himself. After learning where the shepherd was located, he goes to confront him in order to get answers. However, the shepherd is reluctant to answer.

The Servant actually answers eagerly by saying that Oedipus is that same baby, who was abandoned by his father and mother - and the herdsman reacts with fear and begs the messenger to hold his tongue. He must be eager and bold to reply in such a way
