Martin Luther taught that sins could be forgiven simply by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Before his intervention in the catholic church, the church was telling people that they had to pay the church money to have their sins forgiven and to let their family go to heaven- and peasants could not afford that. When Martin Luther taught the truth- that they only needed to believe in God- they were pleased because they would not be using all of their money on the corrupt church.
