Answer is -8. Pretend you are in 3 dollars debt and then you spend another five dollars. In how much debt are you in now?

The answer is -8. Just pretend they are positive numbers on the number line but instead of moving up from 0 move down into the negatives. Start at -3 then move five over on the negatives to -8.
