The graph below shows the velocity f(t) of a runner during a certain time interval:
Which of the following describes the intercepts on the graph?
A. The initial velocity of the runner was 8 m/s, and the runner stopped after 2 seconds.
B. The initial velocity of the runner was 2 m/s, and the runner stopped after 8 seconds.
C. The initial acceleration of the runner was 8 m/s2, and the runner stopped after 2 seconds.
D. The initial acceleration of the runner was 2 m/s2, and the runner stopped after 8 seconds.

Answer:

The statement which describes the intercepts on the graph is:

B. The initial velocity of the runner was 2 m/s, and the runner stopped after 8 seconds.

Explanation:

The graph shows shows the velocity f(t) of a runner during a certain time interval.

The slope of this graph between different points will give us the acceleration of the runner.

Now, based on the graph we observe that when t=0 the velocity of the runner was: 2 m/s

( since, the point on the graph is: (0,2) )

Also, the velocity of the runner is zero when t=8 seconds.

Since, the point on the graph is at (8,0)

Hence, the runner stops after 8 seconds.
