If the hat is $975 and the sales tax was 5%, multiply the $975 by 0.05 (%5).
So:
975(0.05) = 48.75
You will add the $48.75 to the $975, since this is your total sales tax on the hat.
$975+$48.75 = $1,023.75
Rose will pay $1,023.75 for the hat.
