Thomas Paine was an advocate of breaking away from British control. In his famous pamphlet, Common Sense, Paine makes several different arguments as to why being independent would be beneficial including:

1) The Americans would not be limited as to whom they could trade with.

2) Americans would not be dragged into conflicts that did not invovle them (perfect example would be the colonists participation in the French and Indian War).

3) Why should a small island country 3,000 miles away be able to create laws for colonists even if they have never been to this continent?
