One number is 4 more than another, and their sum is 60. What is the smaller number?

If x = the larger number and y = the smaller number, then which of the following systems could be used to solve the problem?

A) x + y = 60 and -x + y = 4
B) x + y = 60 and x - y = 4
C) x + y = 60 and x + y = 4

B is correct.
as their sum =60
so x+y=60
again x is 4 more than y
or x=y+4
or x-y=4

Answer:

Option: B is the correct option.

B) x + y = 60 and x - y = 4

Explanation:

Let one number is " x " ; which is also the larger number.

and the other number be " y " ; which is the smaller number.

Also, we are given that:

  • One number is 4 more than another.

This means that the difference of a smaller number from a larger number gives the value "4"

Hence, we get that:

x-y=4

and also we are given that:

  • The sum of two numbers is 60.

This means that:

x+y=60

Hence, option: B is the correct option.
