On September 13, 1814, while the British fleet was in Chesapeake Bay, Francis Scott Key met with them to negotiate the release of a prisoner. Key succeeded in this, but he was not allowed to return from the British ships until they had finished an attack on Baltimore. The British bombarded Fort McHenry all night, but the next morning a large American flag was still flying high. This sight inspired Key to write the lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner.
