If you chose a (furthermore), the following sentence would give details to support the idea that everyone was having a good time.
If you chose c (in fact), one would expect an anecdote to illustrate what a good time was being had.
If you chose d (in other words), the claim would be restated.

Only by choosing b (of course) does the narrator's disclaimer in the second sentence make sense.
