The scientist stopped working as 3:45pm.
Add 4 hours to 8 it’d be 12, making it pm, then add 3 more, completing the seven, it’d be 3pm. Now add back the 30 minutes, it’s 3:30pm. But there’s still 15 more minutes, so 30+15=45. Thus the 45 minutes.
