During his stay in Europe, Simón Bolivar was introduced to the ideas of the Enlightment which motivated him to join the Independence movement since he wanted South America to be free from Spain.

During 1813 he began his military campaign which ended up in the liberation of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú and Panama.
