King Alfred of England also known as Alfred the Great. He was a strong leader and defeated the Danes twice, first in the Battle of Ashdown and second in the Battle of Edington.

During that period England was divided between north and east because this part was declared Danish territory.

Alfred gained control of those areas, reorganized an army, built a series of settlements to defend the southern part of England and united the territory. He also established a code of laws and a coinage. For that, he was called “king of the English”.
